PATHOS-II

Site Phi is the launch site of PATHOS-II, being the home of the Omega Space Gun. It also didn't operate with on-site staff, with personnel being headquartered in its sister station Site Tau.

Overview[]

By the events of the game Phi is in the best condition of all the sites. It has very little WAU infection, and most spaces are clean and have functional lighting.

Control Deck[]

The Control Deck is the main room of Phi. When one steps out of Phi's Airlock, the first thing they see is a three-way corridor that leads to the Control Room in the middle, the Service Area to the left, and the Dive Room to the right.

The Service Area leads to the Power Relay F1, Restrooms, and Storage. According to a note left by Neil “Kovsky” Tsiolkovsky, Phi's Storage had food rations. The Restrooms and Storage are the only areas in Phi that the WAU has invaded. The Restrooms in particular are in the worst condition, with the stalls having been broken apart by the spread and everything in and around the stalls being splattered in Structure Gel and covered in WAU tentacles, lumps, and bioluminescent growths.

The Control Room is a wide area containing Phi's main workstations and other infrastructure important to Phi itself. When one enters the first thing they'll see is the bulkhead swingdoor to the Launch Dome, and to the right is the door leading to the Assembly.

Assembly[]

The Assembly most prominently contains the Loading Dock, which is the only room that's labeled on the signage.

Appearances[]

On January 24, 2103, 12 days after the Impact Event, Tsiolkovsky entered Phi and retrieved the food rations from Phi's Storage, moving them to Tau. This is revealed by a note left by Kovsky next to the door to Storage and Phi's activity logs.

On December 27, 2103, a party formed by Catherine Chun, Sarah Lindwall, Nicolai Ivashkin, Ian Pedersen and Jasper Hill arrived at Site Phi in order to complete the final stages of the ARK project. An argument over the ARK's fate resulted in the killing of Catherine Chun by her colleague, Ian Pedersen, who claimed it was an accident. The group opted to postpone the ARK's launching, and returned to Tau to figure out their next plan of action.

At some point after Tau's failed evacuation attempt, the original operator of the Omega Space Gun, Antjie Coetzee, climbed the gun's barrel to reach Site Omega, the surface platform affixed to its barrel at the surface of the ocean.

In SOMA[]

Following his ordeal at the Core Isolation Laboratory in Site Alpha, Simon Jarrett seals himself within Phi, finding it to be completely empty but in good condition. Plugging the Omnitool into another terminal, he informs Catherine of recent events (including his discovery of the intact ARK and subsequent cargo transfer to the station) after she voices concern over the loss of his arm. Catherine reveals that it's currently May 11, 2104, 3:30 AM, although she doesn't remember when they started.

Searching through the lower level of the station, he finds the ARK intact and still hooked to the cargo arm. He carries it to the assembly space and loads it into the Omega Space Gun's missile shell. In the room, he also finds Catherine's corpse. Her accidental death was the result of an argument with her colleagues about the ARK launch. Simon informs her of the details, much to her shock and disbelief.

Having loaded the ARK into the shell, Simon heads back up and into the Launch Dome to launch the vessel into space. After loading the shell into the Omega Space Gun, Catherine prompts him to start the launch. Both Simon's and Catherine's consciousnesses are copied onto the ARK, with Simon's narrowly finishing its transfer before the countdown reaches zero. After a flash, Simon regains his senses, only to find that he is still seated in the dome's pilot seat.

He calls for Catherine, who is also still inside the Omnitool. After Simon asks why they are still at Phi, Catherine frustratedly re-explains that his consciousness is only copied, not moved to the ARK, and that a situation similar to that at Site Omicron has taken place, in which two copies of himself now exist.

Feeling betrayed and enraged, Simon lashes out at Catherine, accusing her of breaking her promise of a new life on the ARK. Both get into a heated argument until Catherine stresses herself to the point where her circuits fry, deactivating her consciousness in the Omnitool; this in turn overloads the Omnitool, damaging the internals and rendering it useless. Now alone and stuck at the bottom of the ocean in a now-defunct station, Simon helplessly calls out for Catherine, begging her not to leave him alone.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • According to the sign texture for Phi (SOMA\entities\station\ornaments_wall\sign_phi_inside_xx\phi_inside_sign.dds), living quarters were planned at some point. This either means that the site was at some point planned to have been have been manned like the other sites on PATHOS-II, or there were living quarters constructed at Phi just in case, similar to how there were food storages at Phi despite its unmanned status.
  • There's a discrepancy in recorded dates regarding the events previous to SOMA. Ross records the arrival of the ARK team on December 25, and on December 26, Ross writes in his log: “Some of the engineers returned from Phi. Apparently they postponed the ARK launch..." But there's a log at site Phi that records the arrival of Catherine, Sarah, Nicolai, Ian and Jasper on December 27, and records that they left the same day, except for Catherine.
