Jin Yoshida was a Japanese scientist who was an operative on PATHOS-II, stationed at Tau.

In SOMA, he serves as both a minor character, as well as an enemy, as by the time Simon Jarrett encounters him, he has been mutated into a mindless, hostile creature.

Enemy information

Behaviour

Much like the Proxy, Yoshida demonstrates the ability to open closed doors. If Simon maintains eye contact with him, Yoshida hesitates and stops moving, although this effect doesn't last long. Immediately after Simon turns his back, Yoshida breaks into a shambling sprint, making him difficult to evade. If he gets close enough, Simon should move backwards and maintain eye contact. If he catches Simon, Yoshida attacks him with his facial tentacles before knocking him unconscious.

Jin Yoshida's keen senses make him extremely difficult to evade, but he can be delayed by closing him in rooms, buying some time (about three seconds) while he forces the door open. As with most other creatures, it is recommended to keep moving to avoid being cornered, closing doors along the way. Yoshida's eyesight means that he can be misled by hiding in dark rooms, and his keen hearing means he can be distracted by opening and closing doors.

Description

Yoshida's appearance before being mutated is never seen. Because his face is nothing more than protruding tentacles and the rest of his body is covered by the Haimatsu Power Suit suit, there is no evidence of his pre-mutated appearance.

In his mutated form, Yoshida has been merged with the Haimatsu Power Suit via structure gel, which has had the side effect of making him one of the strongest and fastest mutated entities on PATHOS-II. Tentacles protrude from the suit's visor. While somewhat similar in composition to the incarnation of Simon wearing the Haimatsu Power Suit, the creature is both mindless and extremely hostile.

Biography

There is very little information on Yoshida prior to the failed evacuation of Tau described by Julia Dahl. Comms logs at Tau Dispatch mention Yoshida answering the call from Tau to Phi on March 26, 2103. He is also the only person shown in the access log for the Tau reactor Control Room, having accessed it four times throughout December of 2103. This may indicate that his work at Tau was power related.

Logs indicate that on April 12, 2104, Yoshida accessed a Haimatsu Power Suit that had previously been accessed by "/4subjWAUr/". It is unknown whether Yoshida had already been mutated by the WAU at this point. There are no registers in the game stating that the Tau staff had to deal with this creature, possibly indicating that Yoshida was one of the last surviving crew members in Tau and PATHOS-II as a whole if he was still alive.

In SOMA

Simon encounters Yoshida after opening the first red blast door in Tau, at which point Yoshida begins to pursue him. Despite his abilities, Yoshida is unable to use the ladder that Simon uses to escape to the crew quarters, and is not seen again for the rest of the game.
